Hi Sophie, thank you so much for this, it really resonates with me. I'm french but somehow was living in the UK for 4 years and 2 years ago I've basically taken the same leap of faith as you did 6 months ago as moved to Paris and quit my job and instead of looking for another one (which would have been sensible) I've decided to finally have a try at my childhood dream and try to become an interior designer (and working for myself cause I'm delusional enough to think I can fulfill my dream to both change career and stop working for someone else at once)
Anyway, not to say I'm coming from the future but I wanted to let you know being delusional still feels worth it 2 years down the line. I felt a pang in my heart when reading your words about being unsure then relief when you stated you're not ready to go back to a realistic era (if there even exist) so for what it's worth, a stranger with a (kinda) similar life to you and also in Paris is encouraging you to continue.
Oh and if you'd ever be interested in linking up irl and not be strangers, I'd love to get a chance to chat as I genuinely felt so many similarities with our lives when reading this article (I may have gasped at the Brittany picture and thought to myself "attends mais c'est la Bretagne ça!!" as a born and raised bretonne). Whatever you decide, I wish you the very best life in Paris and looking forward to reading you again soon!
I love everything about this. Growth isn't supposed to be easy. Change isn't supposed to feel comfortable. As you said, you may just be a "random girl on the internet", but I do believe we could all learn a lot from what you so eloquently laid out here. I know I certainly have <3
Ugh. I’m getting ready to move to New York soon & I feel this immensely!! Life really is a choose your own adventure & it’s terrifying but the most rewarding part of being alive
I just wanted to say thank you so much for writing this as I am somebody that has basically undergone this exact process right now so hearing somebody else right about their journey, truly fees healing in such a special way! I hope little by little you keep on figuring it all out!
Oh god. I am moving delusionally to Capetown in November to carve stone. I indeed presume there will be more time and space… oh god! I don’t have a plan yet. No money. Whoop whoop. I am happy to read other people being delulu as well.
When I read your story I think: keep going, in only one year you will have reached so so so far I am sure of it! And imagine you on your death bed: YOU DID IT, you followed your dream. Keep being strong.
I already feel like I have to catch myself over and over again in the preparation of the trip. And also already having to love myself when I ‘fail’. ‘Failing’ is a lot about time. Like you said, it takes time to build a life. I need to lower my expectation that I will have a full-time blasting stone career after one month. Lol.
Wow, I am so glad I stumbled upon this article. I love your writing and I see a lot of myself in it. Immediately subscribed and saved your other articles to read. Can’t wait to see what else you have in store to share (at your own pace of course). Thank you for inspiring me!
This piece was so refreshing. “feel the weight of all the hopeful dreamers bartering their delusions on the sweltering streets below” - so beautifully visceral
Thank you Sophie for this wonderful article! I, too, am living delusionally lol and this is so motivational. I just graduated with my PhD and thought I’d have it all figured out by now and I actually decided to stay unemployed, live off my savings, and focus on my hobbies and resetting my nervous system lol. I’ve come to realize everything in life is risky and scary because it’s our first time trying it. But taking the risk is always worth it in my opinion. Wishing you the best!✨
Beautiful piece! I believe it was your earlier post that inspired me to finally move out of my hometown and into a bigger city (e.g, this month)
Being delusional is the only thing keeping me alive/hopeful in the midst of financial burden. It’s not glamorous but I can also see the charm of moving through life on my own terms. Cheers!
